Weiser Choice CPA: Why I Left Corporate to Help Small Business

Like many of you, I faced the harsh realities of the corporate grind early on in my career. We were sold lies in school, being told that our profession is valuable to companies and that we’d have excellent growth opportunities if we just stuck with it. And years later, you see that you’ve been passed on for a promotion one too many times, receiving raises that can’t even match inflation. Indeed, like many of you who have paved your own path, I’m here to start paving my own.

I’m deeply passionate about accounting. Ever since learning what debits and credits were, it’s all I’ve wanted to do. It’s all I have done. I still believe that accounting means something to a business. More than just an expense on the income statement. We don’t just look to the past and tell you what happened; that’s just one small part of accounting. Instead, looking at the past is just one tool in the toolbelt of an accountant. Any good accountant can use that information as a basis for their judgments of the future, helping to make strategic decisions that strengthen the financial foundation of a business. Major corporations have lost sight of this, hailing the C-Suite as the end-all be-all bastion of good decision-making. Where large corporations have faltered, I believe small businesses still acknowledge the value of a good accountant.

The more disgruntled I’ve become as a Fortune 500 corporate accountant, I’ve gotten oddly even more passionate about my profession. I eventually pursued and received my CPA license, unsurprisingly to no fanfare from my employer. I realized that I loved what I was studying more than what I was doing in my daily work. I thought that there had to be a group out there that could use my specialized knowledge, a group where I could help apply all that I’ve learned to its fullest potential. A group where I could help make a real difference.

I realized pretty quickly that the group I was looking for were owners of small businesses. People who have put their lives into making something for themselves. It’s a noble thing, to build something from the ground up, and the idea of being able to help in even a small way is what lights the fire of passion inside me. I have entrepreneurship in my blood; my father owned a dry-cleaning business for over 30 years. My first job was at that dry cleaner, and I got to see under the hood of my father’s life work. It was wildly fascinating to me—the day-to-day operations, the deliveries, the relationships built with the community, and of course the accounting functions. The success that my father saw with his business, and how it gave him purpose is something I want to help others pursue.

You may feel similarly to big accounting firms as I do to the corporate world. Your small business deserves the utmost care, and having an impersonal firm sometimes makes you feel like you’re not getting that attention to detail that your business deserves. Small business is much more personal than what they’re willing to give. There is value in being face to face with someone who is actively working with you, instead of with a firm partner who just checks off the monthly duty boxes. With Weiser Choice CPA, you can have peace of mind that you are always speaking with a real person. You can trust that work is completed, and on time. No inexperienced interns or offshoring that risks your sensitive information. You always get me, Kyle Weiser, the son of a dry cleaner. My hope is that this isn’t just a transactional relationship—I want to be collaborators. I want to help provide what you need on the financial accounting side, so you can focus on growing your small business.
